Victory in Maine: Good News in the Battle for Girls

Victory in Maine: Good News in the Battle for Girls
2:47

This week, we witnessed what might be the biggest victory for Maine since the Battle of Gettysburg. At the height of the Civil War, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain famously ordered his troops to “fix bayonets” and charge. Maine’s humble farmers and fishers carried the day, turning the tide of the war.

In 1863, we had the Battle of Gettysburg; in 2025, we have the “Battle for Girls.” This modern conflict settles a basic matter: whether boys should participate in girls’ sports. This question came to a head in Maine recently when a young man, identifying as a girl, was allowed to compete in and win a girls’ pole-vaulting competition.1

Thankfully, the US Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights has just publicly concluded that the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Principals’ Association, and Greely High School have violated Title IX by doing so.2

As we reported previously, State Representative Laurel Libby bravely decried this injustice. Consequently, Libby was censured by the Maine House in February 2025. However, this fearsome action backfired on Maine leftists in spectacular fashion, leading to this federal decision.

Whatever happens in the days ahead, the ruling in Maine is historic. It is the first to register boys competing in girls’ sports as a violation of Title IX. The verdict has massive implications for Maine and beyond. According to HHS, competition in girls’ sports must be based on biological sex rather than “gender identity.”

“Gender identity” has no basis in Scripture or fact. As a concept, it is the creation of radical gender theorists. Reality is much simpler. In the Bible, as in the real world, if you have a man’s body, you are a man; if you have a woman’s body, you are a woman. Most elementally, our chromosomes tell us who we are: XX for a woman, XY for a man.

Thankfully, sanity is starting to prevail in America. For example, a striking 66 percent of people now say it’s wrong for “transgender” individuals to compete against members of the opposite sex.3 As Christians, this is a wonderful time to celebrate the goodness of God’s design. These topics are not “culture war” fodder; they are a crucial part of home discipleship and pulpit proclamation as we speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

Let’s protect and cherish girls, and teach them that God made them who they are for His glory.
