A Winter Storm in Maine: Protecting Female Athletes from LGBTQ Ideology

A Winter Storm in Maine: Protecting Female Athletes from LGBTQ Ideology
2:58

The state of Maine is not regarded as a hotbed of culture war controversy. Maine is better known as “Vacationland,” where tourists flock in the summer to eat delicious lobster, traverse the unspoiled beauty of Acadia National Park, and fall asleep to the sound of ocean waters.

But in recent years, Maine has sadly embraced the woke agenda. Under the leadership of Governor Janet Mills, Maine has enabled young men to play girls’ sports. Across the state, young men have won numerous girls’ cross-country races and other athletic competitions. Mills and other avowed leftists celebrate these developments, and they have vowed to defy President Trump’s recent executive orders that rightly bar the participation of biological males in girls’ sports.

Thankfully, State Congresswoman Laurel Libby recently decried the injustice of men in women’s sports. For doing so, she was censured by the Maine House of Representatives and lectured by House Majority Leader Matt Moonen on the House floor.

Moonen said this about Libby: “She has irreparably broken the trust that has been placed in her as an elected official serving in this House of Representatives.”1 Moonen meant this public hectoring to be a display of strength, but his action backfired spectacularly. He made national headlines as a scold, while Libby became an unexpected folk hero for her bravery.

This matter reaches far beyond partisan politics. As a civilization, America has failed its children. It has embraced pseudoscience that is no science at all; it has created a category of humanity, “transgender,” that quite literally does not exist; it has encouraged children to warp their bodies and distort their very selves through LGBTQ ideology.

We must do better for our children. When children experience “gender dysphoria,” feeling trapped in the wrong body, they need the most intensive care possible. They need a father and mother who will lovingly steer them away from ruining their body and confusing their identity. And they need a church community that supports such wise parenting and ministers grace and truth in Christ.

We Christians cannot be silent about ideologies that ravage children. We follow a Savior, after all, who was not uninterested in children nor bothered by them. This Savior, Jesus Christ, called the little children to him (Mark 3:23). He welcomed little boys and girls in an embrace of great warmth, protection, and love, and He blessed them (Mark 10:13-16).

Through courageous speech, principled action, and daily discipleship, so must we.
