In this week's episode of Defending Faith, Family, and Freedom with Gary Bauer, senior vice president of public policy at the James Dobson Family Institute, Bauer parses former President Donald Trump's recent video position statement on abortion, Roe v. Wade and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). IVF is one of several techniques available to help couples with fertility problems having a baby. According to recent polls, 86% of Americans support this medical procedure. Bauer points out that some pro-life Christians, in good conscience, object to IVF because some fertilized embryos are lost in this process. However, the way Trump framed this issue was pro-family and overwhelmingly pro-life. After addressing IVF, Trump hit the issues of abortion and Roe v. Wade head-on, saying, "Many people have asked me what my position is on abortion and abortion rights, especially since I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of something that all legal scholars, both sides, wanted and demanded be ended: Roe v. Wade." Trump added, "It must be remembered that the Democrats are the radical ones on this position because they support abortion up to and even beyond the ninth month. The concept of having an abortion in the later months, and even execution after birth—and that's exactly what it is. The baby is born, the baby is executed after birth—is unacceptable, and almost everyone agrees with that." Listen to this podcast to hear Bauer's commentary on Trump's full statement.
