In this inaugural weekly podcast, Gary Bauer, Senior Vice President of Public Policy at the James Dobson Family Institute, introduces his audience to Defending Faith, Family and Freedom. In this first episode, Bauer provides a brief American history lesson on perhaps the most misunderstood foundational topics—the separation of church and state. He takes listeners on a brisk walk through the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence. Bauer explains that although the founders, as scholarly well-read men, based some of their formational ideas of the American Republic on Greek and Roman political philosophy, those were penultimate sources for the very cornerstone of their construction of the Declaration—and later the Constitution which came from the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments. Bauer bolsters his point with the second stanza from the Declaration: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
