Families in Colorado are at “threat level midnight.” The reason: House Bill 25-1312, called the “Kelly Loving Act.”1 If this bill passes the House and Senate, Colorado fathers and mothers must use a child’s “preferred pronouns.”
Parents who do not do so will be legally guilty of “deadnaming” and “misgendering” their child. The state will consider such disregard as “coercive control,” which will seriously jeopardize parental custody.
The stakes could not be higher in Colorado at present. Christians in Colorado (and beyond) should pray for God’s intervention. In addition, we should lift our voices concerning the “Kelly Loving Act.”
We should do so because there is everything to lose in this political battle. If the government restricts parents from raising their kids, the family—as made by God—will cease to function. Such a shift will significantly affect discipleship, as most conversions to the Christian faith are through the loving witness of godly families.
These developments in Colorado remind us that the church cannot opt out of politics. God has not called us to be broccoli in the freezer, hidden away, alone, waiting to be plucked from the world. God has called us to be “salt and light,” lovingly engaged in the upheavals of our communities and nation (Matthew 5:13-16).
This calling is not only true for professional politicians. It is true of soccer moms, hard-working dads, college students, mature saints, and everyone in between. We don’t need a company of superstars; we need an army of saints telling the truth and defending God’s design.
As we take note of House Bill 25-1312 in Colorado, we must not lose hope. After all, we have just celebrated Easter! It is the time of the year when the church celebrates the death of Jesus Christ for our sins and the resurrection of Christ for our translation to glory.
We are not an abandoned people. Yes, the threat level is intense right now in beautiful Colorado. The family is imperiled. The alarms are ringing. But instead of heading for the freezer, let us join God in His kingdom work.
Let us answer the call.
