Recently, four women’s collegiate volleyball teams made history by refusing to play against San Jose State University, a team with biological male Blair Fleming among its members.
A big development in this story just landed: a fifth volleyball team, from the University of Nevada, has joined them. Although university officials publicly declared weeks ago that their women’s team would play, the players recently came to a different decision.
They released this statement: “We demand that our right to safety and fair competition on the court be upheld. We refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes.”
It is difficult to undersell how significant this action is. The female athletes of the University of Nevada have rightly recognized that they face an issue of justice, not a mere disagreement of opinion. On average, men are much heavier, stronger, and faster than women. Because of this, adult women who play intense sports against adult men face the possibility of serious injury.
This is not speculation. In a match against San Diego State University, Fleming—the biological male—spiked the ball so hard that the defensive opponent on the back row had no time to react. The ball hit her in the face, knocking her to the ground. This scene, captured in a viral video clip, tells us all we need to know. It is not “pro-woman” to go along with the new gender ideology to force female athletes to play against men. It is anti-woman.
Christians, by contrast, are truly pro-woman. We honor the unique dignity of womanhood, and we protect females when they are endangered by males. In these strange days, we add our voice to the chorus of those who speak up in public for the good of women.
We follow a Savior, after all, who laid down His own life for His bride (Ephesians 5). When danger arose, He stood up and was counted.
May we be like Jesus today.
