Newsom is a rising star in the Democrat Party. Many analysts believe he will run for president in 2024. Last week he launched a new billboard campaign in conservative states, urging women to come to California for abortions. Newsom tweeted, "To any woman seeking an abortion in these anti-freedom states, California will defend your right to make decisions about your health."
The ads are disgusting on their face. Why would any state want to be known as a place you can go to destroy innocent babies? But what has really caused a backlash is Newsom's inclusion of Mark 12:31 at the bottom of the billboards. "Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these."
Newsom presumably is suggesting that he and California are being "good neighbors" when they urge women intent on destroying innocent life in the womb to come to California. The Governor's actions mock the Scriptures and Christ's message of love. The God of the Bible tells us to "choose life," as He knit us in our mothers' wombs (Psalm 139:13b). Jesus was a protector, not a destroyer, of little children.
The context of the verse quoted by Newsom is well-known to Christians. Jesus was asked, "Which commandment is the most important of all?"
In verses 12:30-31, He says this, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your minds and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.'"
The Governor of California should try harder to love babies instead of distorting Christ's teachings to justify killing them in their most vulnerable state. Please pray for this man and let him know that all of God's children are worth saving—including the ones who are still in their mothers' wombs!
