The moral and public policy demands of the transgender movement have deeply divided America, but apparently, President Joe Biden is committed to using the full power of his presidency to promote them. He just issued a statement on the subject, which he signs off by saying, "Now, therefore, I, Joseph R. Biden, Jr., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the United States, do hereby proclaim 31 March 2023, as Transgender Day of Visibility." For many Americans, every day feels like a day of visibility of the trans movement. The statement begins with this puzzling claim, "Transgender Americans shape our nation's soul…" Really?
Biden's statement made clear that he rejects laws passed in multiple states to protect children from being subjected to disfiguring surgeries and powerful chemicals in an effort to change their gender. These laws have been passed, usually by large majorities, in at least 12 states in an effort to protect those minors from dangers they can't possibly understand.
Biden distorts these laws and the motivation of concerned parents and lawmakers by describing the legislation as "A wave of discriminatory state laws …targeting transgender youth, terrifying families and hurting kids who are not hurting anyone," the President said.
There has been a long-standing consensus in America that young children do not possess what is called "agency." They do not possess the mental maturity, capacity and discernment to make decisions with serious life-long and life-changing consequences. This is the reason children generally can't sign contracts, make their own medical care decisions, or vote. Today, Biden and the transgender movement are demanding that a child at virtually any age be permitted to decide what his or her gender is, and be subjected to so-called "gender-affirming care."
All of our instincts tell us this is morally questionable and bad public policy. There is also no good science or medical research to justify castrating a little boy, performing mastectomies on pre-teen girls or giving them powerful chemical and hormone treatments that often result in sterility. Such treatments have also been linked to cancer, heart disease and strokes. Many European countries that initially embraced this radical approach are now backtracking.
Finally, Biden used the occasion of "Trans Visibility Day" to demand Congress pass the so-called "Equality Act," which the LGBTQ movement says would be their most sweeping legislative victory yet. Most Christian legal scholars and advocates, including JDFI, believe the legislation represents a serious threat to our religious liberty.
