The terribly misnamed "Equality Act" is back. This proposed law is the number one legislative goal of the LGBTQ+ lobby. The reason is simple: The legislation would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by adding the homosexual "alphabet soup" as a protected class under federal law.
Liberty Counsel head, Mat Staver, says if the new law is passed it "erases the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA)." That means, he continued, "churches, schools, shelters, daycare centers, adoption agencies" would be required to obey the LGBTQ+ agenda.
In recent months, we have reported on the victories won by the pro-family movement at the state level. For example, many states have restricted radical medical procedures and drugs being given to minor children suffering from gender dysphoria. Local communities have successfully protected children from being exposed to sexually explicit books in early year education classes. Girls' sports have been protected from biological men. The Equality Act would erase these gains by labeling them as "discriminatory."
Liberty Counsel also has this grave warning: Since the Equality Act orders changes to Title XI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it very likely would make all abortions legal as a federal right, overruling 26 states that have restored some protection for the sanctity of life.
The danger of this legislation passing is real. In the House of Representatives, 212 House Democrats (out of 212) are actually co-sponsoring it. If only a few weak members of the Republican majority join the Democrats, the bill will pass.
In the Senate, 60 votes are needed for passage. Democrats hold a 51 to 49 majority. Of the 49 Republicans, most would vote "no," but only 9 would be needed to pass the legislation and send it to Biden for his signature. Notably, Biden urged the passing of this attack on religious liberty in his State of the Union address.
JDFI is putting the full weight of our resources and influence to stop this disastrous legislation. We are working closely with like-minded groups to warn members of Congress that voting "yes" on the Equality Act will result in millions of pro-family, pro-life Americans voting them out of office.
