Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer Announces Retirement

It appears that President Joe Biden will have the opportunity to nominate a justice to the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice Stephen Breyer has announced that he plans to retire early this summer, at the end of the Court's current term.

While the White House has, to date, declined to comment, Fox News reports that it is expected that President Biden will nominate a black woman, consistent with his campaign pledge. And, of course, it is widely anticipated that the nominee will hold views consistent with the more liberal members of the nation's highest court.

Justice Breyer's planned retirement is yet another example of the importance of your vote. President Biden appointed (and had confirmed) 40 Article III judges in the first year of his presidency, compared to 18 for former President Donald Trump. These judges are under ever-increasing pressure to make law rather than interpret law. Too often they have succumbed to that pressure, functioning as super-legislatures rather than neutral arbiters. These actions have wreaked havoc on our society, bringing us atrocities such as abortion on demand, same-sex marriage, and the so-called "separation of church and state."

It is essential that our elected public officials appoint judges who will not overstep their constitutional role. Accordingly, you have a responsibility to support and elect public servants who will take seriously their responsibility to preserve our constitutional balance of powers.
