Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson (R-LA) and his Christian faith continue to come under heavy attack in the media from radical secularists and powerful left-wing special interest groups. To his credit, Speaker Johnson shows no sign of "hiding his light under a basket," choosing instead to educate his critics and teach a little American history while he is at it!
Recently, in a long interview for the Daily Signal, a conservative publication that covers culture and politics, Speaker Johnson said he believed that "it's a central premise of the Bible that God invented civil government." He repeated his assertion that God raises up some individuals to serve in government.
He went on to explain:
"While that may seem odd to some people now, in previous generations of America, that was almost universally accepted as truth. The founders wrote about it extensively, and our leaders throughout the history of our country have spoken in similar terms."
Speaker Johnson then gave some historic examples, quoting George Washington and our second president, John Adams, who said, "Our Constitution is made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
Speaker Johnson is absolutely correct. Everything he asserted was widely taught in American schools up until just a few decades ago.
Commenting on the growing problems in the United States that have led 75% of Americans to believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, Speaker Johnson said this:
"We live in an age of moral relativism, which has become postmodernism, which is gradually becoming nihilism, the idea that if there is no truth, then you can believe anything or everything or nothing. I think that in a sense, it sort of unties us from the moorings that have kept us in safe harbor as a nation. We are adrift as a nation. We're in uncharted waters."
Speaker Johnson reminded the interviewer that our nation's motto is, "One nation under God." He contrasted that to the Marxist and communist countries that are built on the lie that there is no God. Johnson then warned that:
"We were built on the exact opposite premise, that there is a God and He's the one Who gives us our inalienable rights. Where you begin with either of those premises, you lead to very, very different results. And my contention is the same as what the Framers' was … that the reason we are the extraordinary, exceptional nation that we are is because we begin with the truth. I think we deviate from that at our peril."
JDFI is excited that we have a Speaker of the House who is a committed follower of Jesus Christ, and who understands that our liberty comes from God, not from government. We are already establishing a close relationship with Speaker Johnson in these challenging days for our country.
