"This has nothing to do with women's health, but with the health of a precious, struggling newborn gasping for breath after attempted murder."

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — On Monday, February 25, 2019, the U.S. Senate is scheduled for a floor vote on Senate bill S.311, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act sponsored by Senator Ben Sasse (R., Neb.). The bill would guarantee that any child born alive in the context of an abortion would be provided full legal protection as a living human being. Therefore, the bill also mandates that medical treatment to attempt to save the child's life also be provided. Sen. Sasse had originally called for "unanimous consent," a parliamentary procedure that would have expedited the bill's passage through the Senate, however the effort was blocked by Senator Patty Murray (D., Wash.) on behalf of Senate Democrats. There is currently no federal law which requires medical professionals to provide treatment for children born alive after attempted abortions, and as of 2014 only 26 states had laws mandating medical care in such instances. Furthermore, New York's recently passed Reproductive Health Act (RHA) removed that state's protection for children born alive after an abortion.

Dr. James Dobson issues the following statement in support of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act:

"In all my time in the pro-life movement, never did I think I would need to publicly declare my support for a bill like the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. I am truly saddened that we as a country would even have need to protect a child who has survived the horrors of an attempted abortion and has been left to die on a porcelain tray. Shockingly, despite what some politicians like Sen. Murray would have you believe, we do not currently have federal protection for babies who have survived such a procedure.

"Politicians such as Sen. Murray would have you believe that this bill is an affront to a woman's 'health'. That's an outright lie and Sen. Murray knows this. She should be ashamed of herself for spreading such a fallacy. This has nothing to do with women's health, but with the health of a precious, struggling newborn gasping for breath after attempted murder. The failed effort to pass the bill by unanimous voice vote is a national disgrace. Should the bill fail to pass the Senate floor vote on Monday, we must call out all those who opposed it as openly endorsing infanticide.

"Therefore, it is up to Christians and Americans of good faith to correct course and right the ship of our nation. We must pray for our leaders that they will act in wisdom and with urgency. Every human child is an image bearer of the Creator, and we are all fearfully and wonderfully knit together in our mother's womb. I call on all 100 Senators to support the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, sending a resounding and emphatic message to the country that the heinous practice of infanticide will never be allowed in our nation."
