A Divided House Votes Narrowly for Life and Exposes a Deep Moral Rift Between Parties

The Dr. James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI) applauds the two significant pro-life victories in the House of Representatives yesterday. But we are deeply concerned about what the narrow margin of these victories says regarding the growing pro-abortion extremism and the declining moral state of powerful people in government.

The House passed a resolution 222-209 to condemn the wave of violence against pro-life churches and pregnancy resource centers that swept the country after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Over 100 documented attacks have taken place with no perpetrator brought to justice by federal law enforcement. Studies by the Crime Prevention Research Center found that pregnancy centers are 22 times more likely to be attacked than abortion clinics.

Virtually everyone in Washington D.C. has condemned political violence as a threat to our "democracy." But this simple resolution denouncing violent attacks on churches and pregnancy centers passed with only a 13-vote margin. The "yes" vote included all House Republicans but only three House Democrats. It would appear that those who voted "no" on this legislation have taken their lead from the Biden Administration that has said virtually nothing about the attacks. In a nation that embraces liberty and justice for all, this is shamefully unacceptable.

The second pro-life victory showed the same deep ethical and party divide. The House passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act by a 220-210 vote. All Republicans present voted for it, and all but two Democrats voted against it.

The proposed law simply requires that when a baby is born alive following a failed abortion, healthcare practitioners must provide the same level of medical care that any other child born alive would receive. Sadly, there are confirmed instances when babies have been left to die after surviving a failed abortion. This is infanticide and is barbaric. It is deeply troubling that stopping infanticide only passed the House by a 10-vote margin that broke down along party lines. What is to become of America if we do not value life?

As Dr. James Dobson, Founder Chairman of JDFI, has fervently expressed, "You've heard me say that every human life is precious, and no child's life is expendable. I'm going to keep saying it until this entire nation rises up and declares it with me, or until I no longer have breath to speak. There is nothing more precious than the right to life itself. When we fail to honor and protect the God-given dignity and worth of every human being—from conception to natural death—we betray ourselves and our Creator."

JDFI commends the new House Republican majority for fulfilling their pledge to bring these pro-life proposals to the floor of the House for up or down votes. If we, as a people, fail to uphold the sacredness of every human life, the moral foundation that supports our nation may collapse. Sadly, as these legislative votes demonstrate, we are already heading down this perilous path. Join us in praying for our leadership, for their hearts and minds to be turned to a conviction that our inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness come from our Almighty God and Creator.

Take time today to call your representative in Congress at 202-224-3121. Commend them if they voted "yes" or express your concern if they voted "no" on these two pro-life initiatives.

Inspiration That Could Save America

There is always an October surprise in every election, and we may have just experienced it. More on that later. The presidential campaigns are deploying resources and crafting messages to clarify the choice before us. Former President Donald Trump spent half an hour as a McDonald’s employee, effectively turning it into “Donald’s” as he served Pennsylvania families burgers and fries. At a rally in the same state, steel workers gathered around him and gave him a hard hat, insisting that Trump saved the steel industry. Then Trump showed his support of the American people by attending an NFL game. The stadium erupted in chants of “USA! USA!”
